The Colorado Plateau is a diverse and unique environment that includes interesting geology, wildlife, and plant communities. The plateau is largely composed of piñon-pine and juniper woodlands. The US Forest Service recognizes 23 species of juniper trees.
The individual trees found here are as diverse and unique as the environment which they inhabit. Juniper trees are symbolic of their high-desert environment. Some are even iconic, and have inspired great American literature, such as Edward Abbey's Juniper from the pages of Desert Solitaire.
This collection of images, Juniper Portraits explores the natural beauty found the juniper woodlands, specifically in Northern Arizona. I have tried to capture and express the beauty of individual trees, as well as the environment in which they inhabit from my vision, through the viewfinder of my camera.
